Injection molding machines perform a wide range of mechanical movements with differing characteristics. Mold opening is a low-force high-speed movement, and mold closing is a high-force low-speed movement. The short answer: plastic injection molds cost anywhere between $100 for a 3D printed low-volume injection mold to $100,000+ for a complex multi-cavity steel mold for high-volume production, which generally represents the most significant fixed start-up cost in injection molding.
The mold is crated and shipped. The mold arrives and is opened, inspected, and cleaned. It is installed in the press, parameters are entered, and the mold is dry cycled to ensure proper operation. Material is mixed and fed into the hopper, first shots are made, and then the mold is run for 15 to 20 minutes to heat soak it.
Press Sizes – Clamp Tonnage from 30 to 300 tons. Shot size to 24 ounces. Tolerances – Ultra-precision (often 50% tighter than SPI “Fine” Designation). Materials – Virtually all injection molding grades with the exception of Flouropolymers and PVC. Grades include all high temperature and high performance materials.
